Admissions Requirements

Admission Requirements and Acceptance

Candidates must be accepted by the Graduate School before they can be considered for admission to the Geography program. Admission to the program is based on a range of factors. No single factor will guarantee or preclude acceptance, provided that applicants meet the minimum 3.0 GPA set by the University Graduate School. The Geography Graduate Program is selective.Departmental considerations are based upon GPA for the student's last two years of undergraduate coursework, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, the experience and background of the student, and compatibility of interests with those of the faculty as stated in the applicants Statement of Purpose.

Interested students are encouraged to contact specific faculty in the program with whom they share research interests to discuss graduate study in our program.

Students from a variety of majors and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Applying for Admission

Students in all disciplines, whose goals are related to faculty interests, are welcome to apply. Admission is selective, and is based in part on GRE scores, grade point averages, statements of purpose, recommendations, suitability of previous training and experience for graduate study, and other related factors. Although no single factor guarantees or precludes admission, most new graduate students have combined GRE scores higher than 1000 and upper-division grade point averages higher than 3.2.

All application procedures are done through the USM Graduate School’s online application process.

Please visit Graduate School Admissions to begin the application process.

Please be sure to indicate whether you would like to be considered for graduate funding.
