The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Geography and Geology Announces a Tenure-Track Position in Physical Geography

The Department of Geography and Geology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing August 2012.  The Department seeks to hire a Physical Geographer.  Research specialization is open, but preference will be given to one or more of the following:  climatology, urban-environmental, or Geographic Information Technology.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate the application of GIS to their research and advise graduate students on GIS and physical geography applications.  Candidates are expected to teach introductory physical geography (both weather/climate, and landforms) and advanced courses in their field of specialization. The candidate will be expected to sustain research, publications, grants, and be centrally-involved in building upon the department/university strengths in physical/environmental geography.  The candidate will also be expected to support and contribute to the university's mission of building curricula focused upon sustainable development.

The Department of Geography and Geology at The University of Southern Mississippi offers a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in geography.  The department was established in 1912 and is one of the oldest continuously operating undergraduate geography programs in the United States. 

The University maintains a teaching and research partnership with NASA’s Stennis Space Center.  The Department houses the university's GIS/RS lab and is actively involved with the Gulf Coast Geospatial Center at Stennis. The Department maintains a strong alliance with the university’s Department of Coastal Science and Biology.  The faculty of the Department of Geography and Geology have a strong focus upon international research/field programs in Jamaica, Cuba, France, Great Britain, Andean South America and Central America, as well as the U.S. South.
