The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Geography and Geology Announces a Tenure-Track Position in Geology

Mississippi, Hattiesburg 39406-5051.  The Department of Geography and Geology at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a tenure-track position in environmental geochemistry to support a research and instructional focus on depositional systems of the Gulf of Mexico basin starting in Fall 2012. Expectations for this position include: (i) developing a consistent and productive externally-funded program of research that includes graduate and undergraduate student assistants and (ii) excellence in instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses. This position seeks a colleague to balance a traditional geological curriculum with courses consistent with the candidate’s expertise. Research specializations that are preferred for this position include: (a) sediment geochemistry, (b) isotope geochemistry, (c) dating applications, or (d) aqueous geochemistry. The department emphasizes collaborative, interdisciplinary research and instructional opportunities. In addition to the geology B.S. and M.S. programs in the department, a Ph.D. program in geography offers an opportunity to work with doctoral students. A sampling of current alliances includes the USM departments of biological science, marine science, and coastal science; the USM Gulf Coast Geospatial Center; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Engineer and Research Development Center); the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO-Stennis); and other regional universities. Facilities include a large Sedimentology Laboratory, Geomorphology Laboratory, a substantial repository of well logs and core samples from the Gulf Coast, a Geology Library, and multiple classrooms equipped with a plethora of mineral and rock specimens. Additional laboratory space is available for the successful candidate.
