The Westboro Baptist Church, who run the website godhatesfags.com and who frequently protest anyone or anything that dignifies homosexuals in any way (including Matthew Shepherd's funeral), decided to visit Southern Miss to supposedly protest the school's support of our organization. Many GSA members, along with many other people from all over the community, held a counter-protest alongside them. Everything remained peaceful, and our side had much more support than theirs.
Here's some video from the protest: (As always, have patience with Internet media. At least watch the last two videos.) - GSA president (yours truly) giving her view of the situation.
- Amber adds her observations as well.
- General goings-on
- Southern Miss!!!
- Some protesters argue about who God really loves.
- Watch this video closely. Someone not affiliated with the GSA physically confronted the WBC members by attempting to kiss one of the young ladies, and while we appreciate the woman's support of our cause, we are wary about what could be viewed as a violent act. Still, this was quite shocking.
Now for pictures! Thanks again to Bryan for all this.
Two lovers show their couplehood among the WBC members.
What WBC is teaching the youth.
What the GSA is teaching the youth.
 The WBC arrives to protest.
Anjel poses in front of the rainbow that appeared as the WBC left and we were left standing with our messages of love and acceptance.
More kids in front of the rainbow.
I daresay our group on the right greatly outnumbered the WBC.
Make your own decision about this.
WBC member stomps repeatedly on American flag.

While I personally do not think this was in good taste, we did have to maintain our sense of humor throughout this ordeal.
 Some counter-protesters.
The sign on the right nearly brought me to tears.
Maybe so...again, trying to lighten things up!
Last minute poster making. Next time bring lamination!
 Their obsession is deplorable.
 Their ultimate, pointless message.
 Some more hate.
I misspelled "signs" in that link...oh, well!
Us in front of the Dome.
The GSA is not necessarily patriotic or Christian, but these messages were certainly more positive than what WBC said.
 Simple yet fitting.
 Pretty signs!
 Hooray!
"God gave us a rainbow! What did he give you? RAIN!"
It arched over us quite nicely.
 An array of signs.

 The sun finally comes out.
 At least they were persistent.
WBC is in Topeka, but our group member claimed no relation to them!
The rainbow umbrella was a nice touch.
 But we too were persistent.
 People gather for the protest.
 For real!
I think we were all asking ourselves, "WTF?"
