Jacob Breland, Ph.D.
Jacob Breland, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Management and International Business where he specializes in human resource (HR) and organizational behavior (OB) management. His teaching assignments include both undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of talent management. His research interests include organizational politics and power, organizational fit, and social networks, and his work has been published in such peer-reviewed outlets as Journal of Management, Journal of Managerial Psychology, Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, and Career Development International and presented at Academy of Management and Southern Management Association conferences.
Dr. Breland has also consulted on HR issues for a number of organizations, ranging in size from small, family owned operations to those having thousands of employees. He has experience working in the profit, non-profit, and governmental sectors across a variety of countries, including the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and China.
Dr. Breland earned his Ph.D. at the University of Mississippi where he specialized in HR/OB. His M.B.A. and B.S. (psychology) were earned at Southern Miss. He also holds his Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), which is a management level certification in HR knowledge and competency, from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), the leading association for HR professionals. Prior to joining the faculty at Southern Miss, Dr. Breland served at the University of Idaho (Moscow, ID) and Youngstown State University (Youngstown, OH).
