Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education

Welcome potential Golden Eagle teachers! The undergraduate programs and graduate programs are accreditated by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Mississippi Department of Education. Students at the undergraduate level are provided extensive clinical experiences in local elementary/middle schools prior to participating in student teaching. The program is designed to provide experiences that prepare teacher-candidates for the "practical" world of teaching. The undergraduate programs include Elementary Education, K-6 licensure; and Special Education K-12 licensure. The graduate programs include Master's, Specialist's, and Doctoral degrees in Elementary Education, Reading Instruction, Secondary Education, Early Childhood Education, and Special Education.

In addition to our academic programs, our department operates three service centers: the Mathematics Education Service Center offers a program of diagnostic assessment and follow-up prescriptive instruction for elementary age children; the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies offers programs for children and parents related to gifted education issues; and, the Center for Literacy and Assessment offers limited diagnostic evaluation for children and adults experiencing reading problems as well as limited remedial instruction and tutorial services.

The faculty in our department are very active in professional associations at the state, regional, and national/international levels. We hope you will consider our department's offerings as you make plans to further your education. We are a community of learners who value knowledge to inform, inspire, and transform lives and would like to have you join our ranks. We wish you well in all your educational pursuits and look forward to seeing you soon.
