Text: Alberts,
B. et al. 2004. Essential Cell Biology. 2nd ed. Garland Science,
Taylor & Francis
Group. New York.
Course Objectives:
To provide students with a general understanding of cellular biology.
Expectations:
Attendance is mandatory. Four unexcused absences will result in
the reduction of your final grade.
Class begins promptly at 11:00 AM. Tardiness demonstrates a lack
of respect for the instructor and your fellow classmates. If there
are circumstances that will prevent you from attending the class
on time, please contact the instructor.
Cell phones, pagers, and all other electronic devices should be
turned off when you enter the room. Should you forget to do this
and one of these items goes off, you will only be allowed to turn
it off without responding. This shows common courtesy and respect
for the instructor and your classmates. If repeated offenses occur,
these items will be excluded from entering the classroom. If an
emergency requires that you MUST have one of these items on during
class, you are obligated to inform the instructor and make appropriate
arrangements.
Grading Policies:
There will be 4 examinations as indicated on your schedule. Each
exam will count 100 points.
A 90–100% 360-400 points
B 80-89% 320-359 points
C 70-79% 280-319 points
D 60-69% 240-279 points
F <60% <240 points
Make up exams will only be given to students who miss an exam due
to extenuating circumstances (illness, death in the family, etc.).
Proof of these circumstances should be documented to the best of
your ability and provided to the instructor. It is your responsibility
to contact the instructor within one week of the missed exam to
schedule a time for the make up. If you do not do this, the instructor
is not obligated to provide you with a make-up exam. Make-up exams
will not be the same as the original exam.
Extra credit is not typically offered. Any time that you would
devote to extra credit is time that could be devoted to the actual
course work.
Late assignments will not be accepted without proof of a legitimate
excuse.
Academic integrity:
Each student is expected to abide by the University of Southern
Mississippi Student Handbook and the Code of conduct outlined
therein. Any type of collaboration on assignments or exams other
than those explicitly outlined by the instructor may result in
the assignment of a failing grade for that particular activity
and/or disciplinary action by the university. Plagiarism will
not be tolerated. If you are unsure of any stipulations within
the USM Code of Student Conduct (including plagiarism) you may
find a copy of the student handbook on-line at http://www.usm.edu/union/studenthandbook.pdf.
This is a tentative schedule and the instructor reserves the right
to make changes as necessary. Exam dates should be viewed as firm
while topics covered may be more flexible.

a disability that qualifies under the American with Disabilities
Act (ADA) and requires accommodations, he/she should contact
the Office for Disability Accommodations (ODA) for information
on appropriate policies and procedures. Disabilities covered
by ADA may include learning, psychiatric, physical disabilities,
or chronic health disorders. Students can contact ODA if they
are not certain whether a medical condition/disability qualifies.
Address: The University of Southern Mississippi on the Gulf Coast
Office of Disability Accommodations, 730 East Beach Boulevard,
Long Beach, MS 35960. Voice telephone or TTY: (228) 214 3232
