Southern
Miss Gulf Coast at its temporary site
|
Six
weeks after landfall of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005,
The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast resumed
classes in leased space at the HealthMark Center in Gulfport,
Miss.
By leasing approximately half of the total square footage
of the complex, Southern Miss was able to convert a part of
the healthcare facility into instructional and office space
as evaluations were made of the university's heavily-damaged
Long Beach campus. For more detailed information about the
research into a permanent home for the Southern Miss Gulf
Coast campus, visit our Campus
Redevelopment page which includes a link to PowerPoint
presentations on the three options currently under discussion.

For those who
have expressed concern about the Friendship
Oak on the Gulf Park campus, it did survive the storm. It was
stripped clean of leaves and its platform, but all major limbs are
in tact.
The
J.L. Scott Marine Education Center and Aquarium located at Point
Cadet in Biloxi was reduced to rubble after Hurricane Katrina slammed
into the Gulf Coast. Classes resumed at the Gulf Coast Research
Laboratory on Monday, Sept. 12. Photos of GCRL after the storm can
be found here.
Southern Miss
facilities at the John C. Stennis Space Center experienced roof
damage, but was able to resume classes on Sept. 12.
