About Camp Live Oak
Southern Miss Gulf Coast is home to the Live Oak Writing Project, which is part of the National Writing Project’s initiative to help educators improve writing and learning for all students.
Teachers may attend a summer workshop (the Invitational Summer Institute held each June) to take part in an intensive writing course. At the workshop’s completion, educators become teacher consultants who continue to work with the project, paying their knowledge and skills forward to more and more educators.
The program conducts workshops on site at schools and on campus. Students in grades 4-7 may participate in Camp Live Oak, a summer writing workshop that takes place on the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus.
Live Oak Writing Project is also working with the Mississippi Department of Education to help teachers work effectively and successfully within the Common Core framework. The project accepts teacher participants from school districts that recommend teachers to participate in the program, which begins in July and is completed in February.
