Meet Dr. James Patterson Smith

Dr. James Patterson Smith, professor of history
  Dr. Smith, professor of history, received his doctorate of philosophy in history from Vanderbilt University in 1984. He joined the faculty full-time at the Gulf Park campus of Southern Miss in 1991. He has recently released, Hurricane Katrina: The Mississippi Story, and is co-author of Beaches, Blood, and Ballots: A Black Doctor's Civil Rights Struggle. In 2006, Smith received the USM Heroes of Katrina Faculty Service Award for Extraordinary Leadership in Academic Program Recovery. Dr. Smith has also written twenty articles and reviews for such publications as Albion, The Journal of Canadian Studies, The Journal of Negro History, The Journal of Mississippi History, The Journal of American Ethnic History, and The Historical Dictionary of the British Empire.
