The American Graduate publishes papers written by graduate students on all topics relating to the study of war and society. Papers should be at least 5000 words with no upper limit. However, authors should understand that lengthy online articles are often difficult to read. Authors are encouraged to include pictures, figures, and charts in their submission. Please follow Chicago Manual for style guidelines. Submit completed manuscript in MS-Word compatible format as an email attachment to kevin.doughtery@usm.edu.

Your review should be 650-700 words in length. It should begin with a summary of the publication information in this format:

Your name and affiliation should appear immediately beneath this information.

Content of the Review

Please make several comparative comments regarding other works of the same genre and include suggestions for further research. Good reviews use basic and specific information about a book to critique or praise it. Your review is usually the first thing readers see about the book in review, so be sure to explain any complex ideas in the work and provide a good summary of the main ideas and contents.

Edited works can present an organizational hazard for the reviewer. In a brief review, it is usually not possible to discuss more than a few contributions in detail. While some aspects of the book may be singled out, most of the book should deal with the book as a whole.

Please organize your review around the issues or arguments presented in the book rather than around the table of contents. Summarize the book’s theme, tone, and style. Be sure to evaluate the book in a clear and well-supported way. Do not be afraid to point out flaws in the book.

Please proofread the final draft carefully for concision and lucidity, avoiding plot and biographical summaries, long citations, repetition of information in the heading, and errors in names and technical terms. If substantive revision seems necessary and time permits, we will consult with the reviewer about changes. All reviews are reflexive of not only the reviewed but the reviewer as well.

At the bottom of the review please include all contact information for the period after the review is submitted. This will not be published, but will allow the American Graduate editors to contact you.

Return your review in a MS-Word-compatible format, preferably by e-mail, to jason.sokiera@usm.edu.
