The Department of History is currently seeking to fill two tenture-track positions.
U.S. Civil War/Reconstruction. The University of Southern Mississippi History Department invites applications for an open level tenure-track professorship in the history of the United States, with a particular focus on the Civil War and Reconstruction. Although we invite applications from all scholars working on the middle period, we are especially interested in those whose work addresses the sectional crisis, the war’s impact on American society, emancipation, and the postwar transformation of the South. Position begins August 2009. Responsibilities will include teaching world history surveys, upper-level and graduate courses in field of expertise, and directing theses and dissertations in a doctorate-granting department. The successful candidate will also be expected to enhance the department’s graduate program in the history of the U.S. South and contribute to the further development of its Center for the Study of War and Society. Minimum qualifications are doctorate in History by time of appointment and evidence of ability to engage in scholarly research as well as effective teaching. Advanced assistant professors will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates who are associate or full professors. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Early America (Backcountry/Borderlands, American Indians, or Environmental). The University of Southern Mississippi History Department invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the history of early North America (c. 1600–1860) with a specialization in the backcountry/borderlands, American Indians, or the environment. Applicants with experience in Public History are particularly encouraged to apply. Position begins August 2009. Responsibilities will include teaching world and American history surveys, undergraduate and graduate courses in field of expertise, and directing theses and dissertations in a doctorate-granting department. Minimum qualifications are a doctorate in American history by time of appointment, evidence of scholarly potential, and proof of effective teaching. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
