Dr. McCarty's major publications include Hattiesburg: A Pictorial History and articles in various journals. Dr. McCarty was a distinguished instructor of classes on Mississippi History and U.S. – East Asian relations and is the former editor of the Journal of Mississippi History. In 2003-2004, Professor McCarty served as president of the Mississippi Historical Society.
