Department Announcements Spring 2009
- The American Association of University Women has named Dr. Sarah Franklin a 2009-2010 American Fellow.
- Dr. Heather Stur has won a travel grant from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor, MI.
- The Department of History at the University of Southern Mississippi is sad to announce Dr. William K. Scarborough's retirement. Well wishers may contact him at the Scarborough Retirement Page.
- The Department of History is sad to announce that Dr. Martin Lociano will be leaving academic life. We wish him well.
- Dr. Andrew Wiest has won the University's Faculty Excellence Award for Research and Dr. William Scarborough is this year's recipient of the University's Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Congratulations to Dr. Kyle Zelner on the publication of his first book, A Rabble in Arms, from NYU Press. Read More

- Undergraduate History/SSL major Terry Johnston has been awarded a James Madison fellowship. This is a national fellowship that supports graduate study of American history by aspiring secondary school teachers. Great work. Read More
- History graduate student Meghan Waldow has just been named a fellow of the Auschwitz Jewish Center (founded in part by Elie Wiesel), an award that includes a month of study in Poland.
- History graduate student Aaron Anderson has a full length article coming out in the Spring edition of the Journal of Mississippi History entitled "Natchez Postbellum Merchants: A New Kind of Planter," which is a chapter of his current dissertation.
- History graduate student Michael Doidge has been awarded two prestigious fellowships: the Harry J. Carman Fellowship and the Army's Center of Military History at Fort McNair in the District of Columbia fellowship (one of two winners nationwide).
