Erin O’Donnell has been an instructor in the USM History department since Fall 2006.  She teaches courses in world history, Asian history, modern Indian history, and modern Chinese history.  She is currently (ABD) in South Asian Area Studies at the University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.  Her area of concentration is modern South Asian culture and history, and her dissertation topic explores and historically contextualizes the filmic sensibility of the late Bengali filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, one of the foremost film directors of India. Her current academic interests are the history of filmmaking in South Asia (particularly in Bengal, Bangladesh, and “Bollywood”), representations of women in Indian, Chinese and Japanese film, modernity in India, and the evolution of communism in 20th century India (specifically in Bengal).
