With a national reputation and an international subscription list, The Southern Quarterly is an independent journal published by The University of Southern Mississippi. Founded in 1962, and a member of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals, the Quarterly was one of the first scholarly journals devoted to the interdisciplinary study of southern culture.
We are committed to the interdisciplinary study of the South through reasoned consideration of the arts. We define "the arts" broadly to include literature, folklore, anthropology and history, as well as the traditional arts and architecture. We also broadly define "the South" to include the Caribbean and Latin America. Recent special issues have included Race and Memory in Southern Fiction; Free People of Color in Southern History; Hurricane Katrina; Imagining the Atlantic World; Southern Food and Drink; and The Common Routes of Louisiana and Haiti.
