Honors College student recently presents paper at the "Next Katrina Conference."
Mark Harris, a junior philosophy major from Mobile, AL, recently presented a paper at the "Next Katrina Conference" at the Southern Miss Long Beach Campus.
The conference focused on community resiliency in the wake of a major disaster on the Gulf Coast. Mark's paper dealt with encouraging place attachment so that residents, especially transplants, are more likely to stay in a community after a storm. He was glad for this opportunity to present at an academic conference for the first time.
Honors student attends poster session
Amanda Self recently presented a poster, "Preliminary Statistical Analysis of Elderly Fingerprint Image Quality/Enhancementat Using I.D. Enhancer Solution," at the 2009 International Association for Identification Conference in Tampa, Florida. She was one of five Southern Miss students who attended the conference and the only undergraduate. Way to go, Amanda!
Honors students named Emerging Scholars by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
Mark Harris, Marie Holowach, Ashley Villarreal and Molly Richard have all been named Emerging Scholars by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Phi Kappa Phi awards this designation to 60 rising sophomores from around the country. Applicants must have maintained at least a 3.7 through at least 30 hours of coursework in their freshman year and demonstrated exceptional academic promise and leadership. Only three other universities received the maximum of four awards per chapter so we are thrilled with this group’s success! Congratulations and keep up the good work!
Honors student will spend her summer doing research at the University of Georgia at Athens.
Honors College senior Lisa Palchak, who is majoring in math with a minor in computer science, is spending her summer doing research at the University of Georgia at Athens (UGA). Accepted as one of a handful of participants in a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates at UGA’s Department of Math, Lisa’s research focuses on Graphs, Root Systems, and Cohomology. Students in the program receive housing, travel support and a stipend.
Emily Hoff Receives Research Internship
Senior Honors student and Polymer Science major Emily Hoff is in Gaithersburg, Maryland, this summer working on an internship with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Emily is one of 151 applicants to receive the internship which is an undergraduate research fellowship. Working in the NIST Center for Neutron Research lab, her research involves the study of multilayered lipid membranes with incorporated membrane proteins.
William Hatten Earns Internship/Scholarship
William Hatten was selected from a national pool of applicants to fill one of four spots for the Summer Professional Training Program at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison, New Jersey. In addition, he was selected to receive a scholarship/stipend. William is directing three short scenes with actors from the Apprentice Company, he is helping to direct a program with the Next Stage Ensemble and he is the assistant to the director for the mainstage show, School for Wives by Moliere. William also is attending Shakespearean text-analysis, play reading, Viewpoints, Suzuki, movement and voice classes as well as weekly master classes on a variety of subjects. He plans to take advantage of his proximity to New York City and see plays and other cultural events as often as possible.
Honors students named National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows
Congratulations to Jessica Shackleford and Ashley Cox who have been named National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows. The NSF provides four years of funding for graduate study. Justin Poelma was also named an Honorable Mention Recipient. The NSF normally favors graduate applicants so we are thrilled at the excellent showing by our graduating seniors. This is the best result USM has ever had in one year. Congratulations to all three!
Honors Student Heads for LSU in the Fall
Graduating Senior Derik Wood will have all expenses paid by LSU as he begins his Master of Library and Information Science in the fall. In addition, he has been selected as hall director for the two Honors Halls on the LSU campus, which will provide him an extra stipend.
