Thesis Timeline

May Graduation 2008 Thesis Schedule

Friday, 8/10/07 - Last day to submit prospectus for senior project for May 2008 graduation.

Wednesday, 10/3/07 - Last day to submit completed midterm Progress Report on thesis to the Honors College if the student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).

Friday, 11/2/07 – Last day to file application for May 2008 graduation and to submit letter of intent to department chair and copy to the Honors College. The letter should include the following information:

  • Notification that you are currently enrolled in the Honors College
  • Notification of your intent to graduate with Latin designation, including the semester in which you plan to graduate
  • A request that the department chair schedule your comprehensive exam
  • The deadline for taking the comprehensive exam (4/11/08), and
  • The last day the result of the exam can be reported to the Honors College (4/25/08).

Wednesday, 12/5/07 – Last day to submit completed end-of-semester Progress Report on thesis to the Honors College if the student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).

Wednesday, 2/27/08 – Last day to submit completed mid-term Progress Report on thesis to the Honors College if the student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).

Friday, 3/28/08 - Completed draft of the thesis must be submitted to the adviser.

Friday, 4/11/08 - Revised thesis must be submitted to the adviser for final approval. Also, last day for comprehensive examination to be taken. Results of exam must be reported to the Honors College office.

Friday, 4/25/08 – Last day for results of the comprehensive examination to be submitted to the Honors College office by the student’s major department. The following items are also due on this date:

  • The original and at least one copy of the thesis.  Both should be printed on white paper of 100% cotton quality and should have the original signature of the thesis adviser and department chair.  The original will be catalogued and shelved in Cook Library and the copy will be placed in McCain Library.  If the student wishes to have additional copies bound for personal use, those copies should also be printed on white paper of 100% cotton quality and should have the original signature of the thesis adviser and department chair. 
  • A receipt for payment from the Business Office for binding ($14.05/copy). Please mention account number 14H40 390001 04001 to the cashier in the Business Office when making the payment. Students must pay for a minimum of two bound copies.
  • A postage-paid ($7) padded manila envelope for each of the personal theses submitted to the Honors College for binding. This requirement is for students who will not be living in the Hattiesburg area after graduating and who, therefore, will not be able to stop by the Honors College office to pick up their personal bound copies.

Friday, 5/2/08 – Last day to submit completed Questionnaire for Graduating Seniors. After submitting the theses, receipt for binding, and the questionnaire, students should pick up their Honors medallion in the Honors College office.  Please click here to view and print the Questionnaire for Graduating Seniors.

Friday, 5/9/08 - Commencement.

August Graduation 2008 Tentative Thesis Schedule

Friday, 12/7/07 - Last day to submit prospectus for senior project to the Honors College for August 2008 graduation. The approval page of the proposal should be signed by the adviser and the major department chair before it is submitted to the Honors College.

Friday, 2/22/08 – Last day to submit completed midterm Progress Report on thesis if student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).

Friday, 3/7/08 - Last day to submit letter of intent to department chair and copy to the Honors College. The letter should include the following information:

  • Notification that you are currently enrolled in the Honors College
  • Notification of your intent to graduate with Latin designation, including the semester in which you plan to graduate
  • A request that the department chair schedule your comprehensive exam
  • The deadline for taking the comprehensive exam (7/11/08), and

Friday, 3/21/08 - Last day to file application for August 2008 graduation.  In addition to the application for degree (which should be submitted to the college of the student’s major), Honors students should complete and submit the Questionnaire Concerning Completion of Honors Curriculum and Requirements AND the Application to Graduate with Latin Designation to the Honors College.  The forms are located here and the instructions for completing them are straightforward.  Feel free to contact Paula Mathis at Paula.Mathis@usm.edu or 601.266.4533 should you have questions.

Friday, 6/20/08 - Completed draft of the thesis must be submitted to the adviser.

Friday, 7/11/08 - Revised thesis must be submitted to the adviser for final approval and last day for comprehensive examination to be taken.

Note: Commencement occurs only in the fall and spring semesters.

December Graduation 2008 Thesis Schedule

Friday, 12/14/07 - Last day to submit prospectus for senior project to Honors College for December 2008 graduation.  At time of submission, the prospectus should include a title page and an approval page, and the approval page should be signed by the thesis adviser and department chairperson. 
Friday, 5/2/08 – Last day to submit completed end-of-semester Progress Report on thesis if student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).
Tuesday, 6/24/08 – Last day to submit completed midterm Progress Report on thesis if student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).
Friday, 7/11/08 – Last day to file application for December 2008 graduation.  In addition to the application for degree (which should be submitted to the College of the student’s major), Honors students should complete and submit the Questionnaire Concerning Completion of Honors Curriculum and Requirements (submit electronically to honors@usm.edu) AND the Application to Graduate with Latin Designation (print, complete and submit) to the Honors College. 
Honors students should also submit letter of intent to department chair and copy to the Honors College. That letter should include the following information:

  • Notification of your intent to graduate with Latin designation, including the semester in which you plan to graduate
  • A request that the department chair schedule your comprehensive exam

  • The last day the result of the exam can be reported to the Honors College (Monday, 11/24/08).

Friday, 7/25/08 – Last day to submit completed end-of-semester Progress Report on thesis if student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).
Wednesday, 10/1/08 - Last day to submit completed midterm Progress Report on thesis to the Honors College if the student is enrolled in HON 492 (or major departmental research course).
Friday, 10/31/08 - Completed draft of the thesis must be submitted to the thesis adviser.  The draft, revised and final versions of the senior thesis should be prepared in accordance with the Guide for Writing the Senior Thesis.
Friday, 11/14/08 - Revised thesis must be submitted to the adviser for final approval. Also, last day for comprehensive examination to be taken. Results of exam must be reported by the department (not the student) to the Honors College office.
