Background

Established in 2006, the Center for Spectator Sports Security Management is an interdisciplinary academic center affiliated with the School of Human Performance and Recreation. The capabilities of the Center are enhanced by its close links with other Southern Miss academic and research centers as well as with other institutions of higher learning.

The Center provides a unique, interdisciplinary environment that provides a mechanism for:

  • building security awareness;
  • improving sport security policies and procedures; and
  • enhancing emergency response, evacuation, and recovery operations for terrorist incidents, natural disasters, and crowd management issues.

Goals

The goals of the Center for Spectator Sports Security Management are to:

  • conduct research,
  • provide education, and
  • outreach efforts in sport event security.

Objectives

Our objectives are to become a world wide center of excellence in spectator sports security management:

  • Producing cutting-edge sport security research
  • Leading outreach providers with services to assist sport and entertainment managers with innovative tools, materials and processes
  • Delivering internationally recognized interdisciplinary academic programs in spectator sports security management.

Reasons for Establishment of the Center

Sport events in the United States offer the potential for large numbers of casualties as well as widespread media coverage and economic impact. The fear resulting from an event or series of events could cripple a multi-billion dollar industry.

The University of Southern Mississippi is pleased to announce the establishment of a first of its kind Center for Spectator Sports Security Management (SSSM) - a world wide interdisciplinary center specifically focused on

  • Research

The outcomes derived from the research of this Center will emphasize applications related to the organizational, technical, and educational tools required to prevent, prepare, respond to, and recover from incidents at sport events.

  • Education

The Center's educational objectives are to create and teach courses in sport event security management, create knowledge through its research activities, and disseminate knowledge through academic programs, professional forums, and workshops.

  • Outreach

The Center promotes a Sports Event Security Aware (SESA) Seal of Approval for sport venues, indicating that effective management of prevention, response, and recovery is in place.

Issues

The focus of the Center is to address the myriad of issues constituting potential and actual threats and risks to the ongoing security and safety of sporting events and venues:

  • Domestic and foreign terrorist activities
  • Weapons of mass destruction
  • Explosions
  • Crowd control
  • Natural disasters

Role

As your sport organization reviews its security issues, put our experience to work for your organization.
