Continuous Quality Improvement
The School of Human Performance and Recreation
strives to improve the quality of life of individuals through teaching,
research, and service in issues related to health, leisure, exercise,
and sport. These quality of life issues are many and
diverse and include rehabilitation (both physical and psychosocial), sport
and leisure service systems, and facilitation of individual attainment
of optimal human performance and recreative potential. The school realizes
its mission through:
Advanced
academic preparation for professional practice, including practical
learning, as is demonstrated by the athletic training and coaching and
sport administration programs where classes are offered so that every
student has hands-on experience with athletes, event management, and sport
administration relevant to their specific program
Applied
research in response to social and economic priorities
as is demonstrated by the exercise physiology laboratory that is working
with community agencies to develop the highest quality fitness testing
and unique training protocols relevant to public employees
Expert consultation to industry and governmental bodies as is demonstrated by the physical education program that
is working with state agencies to determine the fitness and physical education
needs of Mississippi’s school children; our kinesiotherapy program delivering
new services to homebound individuals to maintain independence
Direct services to individuals, families, and communities as is demonstrated by therapeutic recreation’s Access Recreation
project, which works with schools and other community agencies to provide
individuals with a disability an avenue for full inclusion and interaction
with nondisabled peers in recreation and socialization; and by the school's
sponsorship of the National Youth Sports Program which provides summer
educational, nutritional, and recreational opportunities to economically
disadvantaged youth
