Graduate
Assistantships are available. Graduate
assistants are assigned responsibilities as assistants in various
laboratory operations, research programs, and in teaching activities
such as the basic instructional program. Students receive a stipend
with waiver of out-of-state and in-state tuition. Priority consideration
for teaching assistantships are given to those with instructional
experience in aquatics, aquatics aerobics, aerobics, golf, weight
training, racquet sports, fitness walking, first aid, volleyball,
camping, canoeing, or physical education school teaching assistant.
Some research assistantships in exercise physiology and therapeutic
recreation are available. Athletic training graduate assistantships
are available to NATABOC
certified trainers. Students
who are interested in applying for a graduate assistantship in
the USM Athletic Department should go to the following link to

Qualifications
The Master of Science degrees are offered in
Human Performance, Sport Coaching Education, Sport Management, Sport and High Performance Materials, Interscholastic Athletic Administration, and Recreation.
Admission to any one of these programs requires an acceptable
score on the Graduate
Record Examination, a GPA of 2.75 or higher at the baccalaureate
level, and an undergraduate major in a related field of study.
The
Doctor of Philosophy degree requires a minimum of sixty (72) semester
hours beyond the master's degree. Consideration for admission
will be based upon the following criteria:
- Acceptable
score on the Graduate Record Examination,
- Previous
academic achievement (GPA 3.5 or above on all previous graduate
work)
- Relevant
undergraduate and master degrees
Professional achievements
- Three
letters of recommendation

Statement of research goals and current resume
- Interview
with program faculty
All
general Graduate Studies requirements of The
University of Southern Mississippi are also required for admission
to the graduate program of the School of Human Performance and
Recreation. Graduate assistantship application should be made
prior to mid-March for full consideration. All graduate applicants
are encouraged to apply for financial
aid and work-study as early as possible in January/February
of each year.
Deadlines for application are April 15 for Summer, June 1 for
Fall, and October 1 for Spring.
