Graduate Degree Programs

The School of Human Performance and Recreation offers the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Program development is oriented toward supply and demand in the professional job market and academic disciplinary definition. Flexibility of program requirements allows for academic fulfillment of individual career interests. 

The following degree programs are available within the School of Human Performance and Recreation:

  • Master of Science in Human Performance
    (emphasis areas include Exercise Science and Physical Education)
  • Master of Science in Interscholastic Athletic Administration
  • Master of Science in Recreation and Leisure Administration
    (emphasis areas include Campus/Community Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation)
  • Master of Science in Sport and High Performance Materials
  • Master of Science in Sport Coaching Education
  • Master of Science in Sport Management

  • Master of Science in Sport Management with concentration in Sports Event Security Management
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Human Performance
    (emphasis areas include Administration and Teaching and Exercise Physiology. The Administration and Teaching emphasis (Ph.D.) is accredited as an Advanced NCATE/NASPE) program.

Exercise Physiology

 

Graduate Assistantships are available. Graduate assistants are assigned responsibilities as assistants in various laboratory operations, research programs, and in teaching activities such as the basic instructional program. Students receive a stipend with waiver of out-of-state and in-state tuition. Priority consideration for teaching assistantships are given to those with instructional experience in aquatics, aquatics aerobics, aerobics, golf, weight training, racquet sports, fitness walking, first aid, volleyball, camping, canoeing, or physical education school teaching assistant.

Some research assistantships in exercise physiology and therapeutic recreation are available. Athletic training graduate assistantships are available to NATABOC certified trainers.

Qualifications 
The Master of Science degrees are offered in Human Performance, Sport Coaching Education, Sport Management, Sport and High Performance Materials, Interscholastic Athletic Administration, and Recreation.

Admission to any one of these programs requires an acceptable score on the Graduate Record Examination, a GPA of 2.75 or higher at the baccalaureate level, and an undergraduate major in a related field of study.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree requires a minimum of sixty (72) semester hours beyond the master's degree. Consideration for admission will be based upon the following criteria: 

  • Acceptable score on the Graduate Record Examination,
  • Previous academic achievement (GPA 3.5 or above on all previous graduate work)
  • Relevant undergraduate and master degrees
    Professional achievements
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Statement of research goals and current resume
  • Interview with program faculty
All general Graduate Studies requirements of The University of Southern Mississippi are also required for admission to the graduate program of the School of Human Performance and Recreation. Graduate assistantship application should be made prior to mid-March for full consideration. All graduate applicants are encouraged to apply for financial aid and work-study as early as possible in January/February of each year. Deadlines for application are April 15 for Summer, June 1 for Fall, and October 1 for Spring.
