Dual Degree Program


Master of Science in Sport Management

and

Master of Business Administration

 


The Dual Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science Sport Management dual degree program is a collaboration between the College of Business and the College of Health.

 

The MBA/Sport Management curriculum will be taught between the School of Human Performance and Recreation and the College of Business. This dual degree will afford gifted students a unique combination of sport industry experience and business knowledge, skills, and abilities relative to assuming an executive sport business person. A culminating internship experience with executives in professional and amateur sport organizations will give the student on-the-job training, networking opportunities and access to a career within the sport industry.

 


Students must meet requirements and prerequisites in BOTH programs in order to qualify for admission into this dual 60-semester-hour program. Upon completion of the program, the student will receive two graduate degrees: MBA and M.S. Sport Management.

Employment for the dual Master in Sport Management and Master of Business Administration graduate will be found in areas such as:

HPR 612 Financial Management in Sport (3 hrs)

 

Advanced principles and applications of finance and economics in the sport industry.

 


HPR 630 Socio-Ethical Issues in Sport
(3 hrs)

 

Advanced study course of social and ethical issues in sport. Social issues include gender, race, ethnicity, aggression, politics, religion, class and social mobility. Ethical issues covered include ethical history, theory, models, and application.

 


HPR 642 Sport Venue and Event Management
(3 hrs)

 

Provides a practical background in all facets of managing a sports event and facility. The content includes organizational structure and staffing, financial management, risk management, operations and maintenance, crowd control and security, marketing an event, and measuring the economic impact of an event.

 


HPR 670 Organizational Leadership & Management in Sport
(3 hrs)

 

Provides concise information and insight into the principles of management as they apply to sport organizations (amateur and professional) and to sport-related businesses of all types. Organizational Leadership in Sport Administration is the education of the process, art, science, and issues in the management of sport. Emphasis will be placed on the organizational planning, implementation, the organization, leadership, and control aspects of sport administration.

 


HPR 677 Legal Issues in Sport (3 hrs)

 

Legal concepts and ethical issues impacting sport administration and coaching policy formation and practice.

 


HPR 682 Research Methods in Sport and Human Performance (3 hrs)

 

Prerequisite: Graduate level statistics course or permission of the instructor. Designed to develop correct application of research methods and statistical process decision making relative to continuous improvement in sport management and coaching.

 

HPR 696 Practicum (9hrs)

 

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Designed to provide master's level students opportunities for practical application of relevant theories in professional field settings.



Will give the student the opportunity to apply their learned academic principles of sport management to the day-to-day realities of jobs in the sport industry. Practicum/Internship allows the student to earn academic credit toward his or her degree while exploring career job interest areas. It also provides the student the opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job training and knowledge; work directly with sport management professionals and begin to develop a networking relationship with those in the field; and answer that all important job question, "What experience do you have in the field?"

 


HPR 715 Advanced Sport Administration Processes (3 hrs)

This course examines the marketing process in the sport business industry. Through the process, the student will study the theories, research, and development of sport marketing and public relations. The course focus will be on the implementation of a sport marketing plan. The course will also look at the communications and public relations activity as it pertains to sport organizations.

 

MBA 600 Business and Society (3 hrs)

 

Prerequisite: Admission to MBA or MPA program. An examination of internal and external factors influencing decision making with an emphasis on ethics, civic responsibility, social responsiveness, and professional values.

 


MBA 605 Problems in Marketing Management
(3 hrs)

 

Prerequisite: MBA 550 or the equivalent. Applications of analytical and communication skills in solving complex marketing problems. See also MKT 605.


MBA 610 Analytical Decision Making
(3 hrs)

 

Application of quantitative methods to decision making.

 


MBA 640 Problems in Corporate Finance
(3 hrs)

 

Prerequisite: MBA 570. Applications of financial theory to complex financial problems.

 


MBA 645 Communication Skills for Managers (3 hrs)

 

Prerequisite: Admission to MBA or MPA program. A course designed to develop communication skills as they relate to managerial effectiveness.

 


MBA 650 Technology in Modern Organization (3 hrs)

 

Prerequisite: MBA 580 or the equivalent. Examination of the impact of information technology on the productivity, quality, service, and enhanced communication abilities of organizations

 


MBA 660 Global Business Strategy (3 hrs)

 

Prerequisite: Admission to MBA program. An analysis of strategic business planning and implementation from the perspective of top management.
