Emphasis in Kinesiology

 

Kinesiotheraphy is defined as the application of scientifically based exercise principles adapted to enhance the strength, endurance, and mobility of individuals with functional limitations or those requiring extended physical conditioning.

 

The kinesiotherapist is a health care professional competent in the administation of musculoskeletal, neurological, ergonomic, biomechanical, psychological, and task specific functional tests and measures.

 

Admission Requirements

 

Any student satisfying admission requirements through the university Office of Admissions is eligible for admission to the School of Human Performance and Recreation.

 

Degree

 

Bachelor of Science in Human Performance with emphasis in physical education and specialization in Kinesiotheraphy.

 

Education Requirements

 

The Kinesiotherapy major is a baccalaureate program accrediated by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) This program can be completed in four years with the inclusion of one summer session. Once accepted into the second level of admission, the student must maintain a 2.8 GPA. Following completion of academic course work, two semesters of clinical internship are required.

 

Professional Credentialing

 

Individuals who graduate from an accrediated program are qualified to take the Kinesiotherapy Registration Examination, which is administered by Professional Examination Service of New York: Those who pass the exam are listed on the Kinesiotherapy Registry and must meet annual continuing education requirements to maintain a registered status.

 

Job Description

 

Kinesiotherapists provide a bridge between acute illness and physical wellness. They work primarily with medically stable patients to assist them in reaching their optimal level of functional capacity. They are skilled in adapting scientifically based exercises to accommodate in the medical/surgical limitations of their clients.

Salary

 

The average starting salary is between $32,000 and $36,000 annually, depending on geographic location.
