B.S. in Human Performance: Physical Education Emphasis
The Bachelor of Science in human performance, physical education emphasis, is designed to prepare students to instruct elementary and secondary-level physical education in both school and non-school settings. Students who successfully complete degree requirements, pass the PRAXIS II and PLT exams are eligible to apply for a standard Mississippi teacher license. The K-12 physical education licensure grants immediate eligibility to teach physical education in schools within Mississippi and other states throughout the United States.
Traditionally, physical education has been practiced by working with school-aged children in school-based settings or with adults in postsecondary institutional settings. Physical education teaching specialists are now applying pedagogical skills in nontraditional instructional settings such as: sport-specific, community-based or residential institutions, correctional facilities, sports camps and other youth organizations.
All students should declare physical education as their major so they will be assigned an advisor in physical education. Requirements from the Mississippi Department of Education may change and supersede requirements printed in The USM Undergraduate Bulletin.
