Mack Gardner

HPR Program of Study: MS in Sport Coaching Education
Graduation Year: Spring 2013
Current Employment: Brookhaven Academy, Girl's Basketball Head Coach

Mack’s growing interest in coaching was met with an opportunity to be Graduate Assistant for the Southern Miss Women’s Basketball team; a unique learning experience he quickly seized. The following year he was promoted from Graduate Assistant to Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.

Mack is certain Sothern Miss' sport coaching education course work, especially the research emphasis, prepared him for his coaching position at Brookhaven Academy. He stated, “Most coaches try to become a successful coach by attending clinics, watching videos, etc. which are beneficial, but to be able to study the scientific aspect of sport was fascinating.” Mack thanks Dr. Melissa Murray for introducing him to the program and all his instructors for “pushing him to think ‘outside the box.’”

For future Southern Miss graduate students, he highly suggests “SPORTDiscus online and to read as much research as you can.” He is a sports junkie at heart, who also enjoys travel and financial investment.

“I came to USM and Hattiesburg for work and school, but it became ‘home’ to me very quickly. Thanks for the memories!”
