Mississippi Home Of Your Own

Home ownership is the American dream—and this dream is no different for people with disabilities. Since 1997, Mississippi Home of Your Own (HOYO) has assisted 272 individuals with disabilities and their families in 45 counties in realizing their dream of home ownership.

The award-winning HOYO program assists people with disabilities and their families with counseling and financial assistance and in locating supports that may allow them to purchase and maintain their own homes.  Financial assistance for qualified applicants can be up to $15,000 per household.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Only individuals with disabilities defined by the ADA or families who have members with disabilities living with them may apply.
  • An individual’s income after expenses must be adequate to make monthly mortgage payments to a lender that must qualify applicant for a home loan.
  • The applicant must be a low-income home buyer purchasing their primary residence.
  • A good credit report and savings for home ownership is recommended.

  • Information and referral
  • Pre-purchase homebuyer education and credit counseling
  • Person-centered planning (interagency collaboration)
  • Research of available options for funding sources for down payments and closing costs, home modification, and reserves
  • Assistance in locating appropriate mortgage, home selection, inspection, and appraisal
  • Individual counseling through the home-buying process
  • Follow-up

Mississippi Home of Your Own is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Mississippi Development Authority, the Mississippi Home Corporation, BancorpSouth Foundation, Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, the City of Hattiesburg, the Enterprise Corporation of the Delta, and the F.B. Heron Foundation.
