Home of Your Own City of Hattiesburg Homebuyer Assistance Program

The Home of Your Own City of Hattiesburg Homebuyer Assistance Program is a partnership between the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) and the City of Hattiesburg, Community Development Division to assist individuals with disabilities or families who have members with disabilities living in their home to achieve permanent home ownership in Hattiesburg. Financial assistance for qualified applicants can be up to $15,000 per household.

Established in 2002, the partnership is a localized model of the statewide Mississippi Home of Your Own Program established by IDS in 1997 to make home ownership a reality for persons with disabilities. To date, 44 families have been assisted through this partnership in becoming Jackson home owners.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant or a household member must have a disability recognized under the ADA.
  • The applicant must be a Mississippi resident who is a first-time, low-income home buyer with the city limits of Hattiesburg.
  • The applicant must be approved by a participating lender and be able to make mortgage payments after expenses.
  • The applicant must have good or improving credit and some savings for home ownership.

Available Services

  • Information and referral
  • Pre-purchase home buyer education and credit counseling
  • Person-centered planning (interagency collaboration)
  • Research available options for funding sources for down payments and closing costs, home modifications, reserves, etc.
  • Assistance in locating appropriate mortgage, home selection, inspection, and appraisal
  • Individual counseling through the home buying process
  • Follow-up

Funders for the City of Hattiesburg Homebuyer Assistance Program are the City of Hattiesburg, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI).
