  4. Tips for College

1.  Law Changes from High School to College

Students with disabilities planning on college need to know how the law changes after high school.  For instance, the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA) is the law for students with disabilities in high school that states that education is a right for all.  In college, the new law is the Americans with Disabilities Act and states that students have the right to equal access to education.  You can learn more about these laws at the TRIAD Library and Computer lab.  For a listing of materials, visit http://www.usm.edu/ids/triad/library_computer.php.

2.  Tips on Internet Safety
It is important to be safe while using the Internet.  Thieves are always looking for information.  Remember to keep personal information to a minimum and use common sense with your personal data.  There are lots of safety tips such as using a free junk email address when you order something on-line.  Safety does not have to mean expensive as there are free programs to protect your computer. For more information, please visit the TRIAD Website section Software Resources and Advice at http://www.usm.edu/ids/triad/software/computer.html or contact TRIAD Coordinator Jerry R. Alliston at 1.888.671.0051 (Toll Free/TTY) or jerry.alliston@usm.edu.
3.  Swine Flu Update
Swine Flu (H1N1) is a new virus causing illness in people. The virus is spread from person-to-person through coughing or sneezing.  The symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.  Prevention includes washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze and using alcohol-based hand cleaners.  If you do get sick and have fever, stay at home for at least 24 hours after fever is gone. For more information visit http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm.

  1. Tips for College

The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning have a Web site with information for parents, those interested in college and transfer students.  Each link on the home page has disability information located at the top right of each page.  You can find a lot of resources such as the disability service staff at all Mississippi 2-year or 4-year colleges and universities.  For more information, visit www.mississippi.edu

***PLEASE NOTE:  If you are unable to access any of the links in the Notes, please make sure the entire link is highlighted.  If a link is not highlighted, please copy and paste the entire link into your Web browser.

Training, Resources and Information for the Advancement of Degrees (TRIAD) is a project of the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) at The University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities (GR# 90DN0228).  TRIAD focuses on assisting youth with disabilities transitioning from school to adult life in accessing postsecondary training opportunities.  For more information, call 1.888.671.0051 or visit IDS on the Web at www.usm.edu/ids.
