One of the major strengths of IDS is its University interdisciplinary training program. IDS is fully committed to the philosophy of interdisciplinary training as a vehicle for long-term systems change. IDS works with over 15 academic units on campus with course work and training activities fully integrated into departmental offerings. Instructional mediums include courses, seminars, content infusion across academic units, online coursework, practical externships, and internships. IDS offers six core courses related to developmental disabilities. In addition, Specialized Studies in Developmental Disabilities are offered each semester to address specific topics such as health care reform and its implications for individuals with developmental disabilities, independent living, special topics on assistive technology, nutrition, positioning and feeding techniques, alternative communication methods, interagency transition planning, and service delivery. In FY 2005, IDS provided training to 143 students across twelve or more disciplines. IDS also provided training to 723 students enrolled in non-IDS course work.
