Edward Sayre, Ph.D. |

Edward A. (Ward) Sayre is an associate professor of Political Science,
International Development, and International Affairs at the University of
Southern Mississippi. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University
of Texas at Austin in 1999, after also completing his Master’s and
Bachelor’s degrees there. Dr. Sayre has written journal articles,
book chapters and research monographs on the Palestinian economy, with an
emphasis on the Palestinian labor market. His recent research has examined
the effect of population growth in the Gaza Strip on the Palestinian economy and
the economic roots of Palestinian suicide bombing. |

Before starting his current
position at Southern Miss, Sayre was a visiting research associate at the
Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS) in Jerusalem from 1996
to 1997 and taught at Kenyon College (1999 to 2001) and Agnes Scott College
(2001 to 2007). Dr. Sayre is a member of the board of directors for the
Middle East Economic Association and the ArtReach Foundation, an organization that helps children in post-conflict areas through art therapy. Dr.
Sayre is married to Dr. Wendy Atkins-Sayre who is an assistant professor
of Speech Communication and the Director of the Speaking Center at USM.
They have two children: a daughter, Gillian, who is eleven and a son, Owen,
who is seven. Sayre is an avid (though not necessarily skilled) soccer
player and coach. He has also run seven marathons, and he is hoping to qualify
to run the Boston Marathon someday.
