Southern Miss is currently facing an outbreak of several multi-threat/multi-vector viruses.
At this time anti-virus products are not able to detect or remove these viruses.
These viruses infect computers automatically, without user interaction, by taking advantage of bugs in Microsoft operating systems.
The only way to protect your machine and data is to follow best practices and keep computers up-to-date in regards to security fixes.
Microsoft routinely publishes fixes for these vulnerabilities via Microsoft's Windows Update website.
In order to ensure that your computer is best protected:
  • Ensure that all user accounts have a strong password, especially accounts with administrative privileges.
  • Computers should be updated regularly with current security updates and fixes.
Windows users can check Microsoft's Windows Update.
  • Do not open programs, files, pictures, or documents (even from trusted sources) unless you are expecting to receive it. This includes pictures or files distributed via Instant Messenger or email.

Currently there are multiple viruses that have infected AOL Instant Messenger clients.
These viruses spread by sending a link via instant message, enticing the recipient to download and launch the virus.
Ways you can protect your computer from infection:
  • Don't click on links or download anything sent through instant message unless you are expecting to receive links or downloads.
  • Make sure that your computer has all current software updates applied. Check Microsoft's Windows Update.
