When a department or organization wishes to make a presence on the Internet, the first step is to have space to install their site. The University of Southern Mississippi iTech provides this space in the form of an account on the University Web server (www.usm.edu).

This policy is required for the effective communication of university policy regarding Web accounts.

ACCESS TO ACCOUNTS
Access to the university Web accounts on the www.usm.edu domain is restricted to The University of Southern Mississippi departments and organizations. Personal Web space for students, staff, and faculty is available through the general web server. Students, staff, and faculty who want to set up personal Web space should contact the iTech Help Desk to get their Ocean password.
Departmental servers that wish to have a DNS name (such as www.basketweaving.usm.edu) are separate from regular departmental and organizational Web accounts. Those servers will need to be registered with the iTech Security officer.
To acquire an organizational or departmental account on the www.usm.edu domain server, an application should be filled out at www.usm.edu/itech/web-accounts. To acquire a DNS name for a departmental server, applicants should contact the Help Desk for details.
WEB ADDRESS POLICY
Most organizational and departmental accounts will have a Web address (URL) similar to www.usm.edu/basketweaving or whatever is appropriate for the account; it may be appropriate to have a Web address that ends in .org (such as www.basketweaving.org) although certain restrictions apply. However, the use of a .org address will mean that the client cannot use the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) authentication for secure forms unless they purchase the software. Clients wanting SSL authentication should contact the Security Administrator, via the Help Desk at 266-4357, for details on how to use the existing one or how to purchase their own if they are going to use a .org URL.
An account on the www.usm.edu server will never have an address such as www.basketweaving.usm.edu; addresses such as this are reserved only for those departments that have their own servers.
Usernames for each departmental/organizational account will be created at the discretion of the administrator who creates the Web accounts. Eventually, departmental/organizational accounts will not have a username, and users of the accounts will log in with their w-EmplID.
Email addresses for departmental and organizational accounts must be unique; addresses currently in use cannot be used for those accounts. Additionally, it will no longer be required for Web accounts to have an associated e-mail account. Also, any departmental/organizational e-mail accounts requested will be listservs, and any mail sent to these e-mail accounts, such as email@example.com will be forwarded to e-mail addresses for persons in each department or organization authorized to receive such e-mails.
WEB CONTENT POLICY
Web page content on University servers are expected to reflect a positive image of the university and must conform with The University of Southern Mississippi Acceptable Use Policy at www.usm.edu/institutional-policies/policy-ACAF-IT-010. Additionally, all content on these accounts must be approved by the USM Marketing and Public Relations Department. Departmental/organizational Web sites not following the Marketing and Public Relations Guidelines will probably not be approved for publication on the Web.
The Chief Information Officer is responsible for the review of this policy every four years (or whenever circumstances require immediate review).
