Curriculum

The International Development Doctoral Program is a 54 credit hour program. The 54 hours are broken into 42 hours of coursework and 12 dissertation hours. Note that this is the minimum number of credit hours required to graduate; students can have more than these minimum requirements.

Students are strongly encouraged to take two of the four core classes their first semester and the second two core courses their second semester. After completing the 4 core classes (12 hours), students will sit for a qualifying exam.

After successful completion of the qualifying exam, the student will choose a major and minor area in which to focus the remaining classes and dissertation research. The areas from which to choose are Political Development/Security Studies, Economic Development and Social/Cultural Development. Once the student has chosen the major and minor fields, the student will complete 12 and 9 hours respectively from the available courses in each area.

Once a student completes all required classwork and qualifying examination, the student will sit for the comprehensive exam.

After successful completion of the comprehensive exam, the student enters into the Ph.D. candidacy, often referred to as A.B.D. (All But Dissertation). The student will then compose a dissertation committee if they have not already done so, and write a dissertation proposal. The student will then orally defend the dissertation proposal in person to their committee.

Successful completion of the dissertation proposal defense leads to the student conducting research and writing their dissertation. After meeting all of the requirements of the dissertation committee, and fulfilling the requirements outlined in the dissertation proposal, the student will sit for an in person dissertation oral defense.

Meeting all of the milestones above and a successful dissertation defense and completed revisions means that you have earned your Ph.D.
