Frequently
Asked Questions about Health Insurance
- Is health/medical insurance
required by the ELI?
Yes. All F-1 and J-1 visa holding students in the English Language Institute are required to have medical insurance.
- I already have medical
insurance. Do I have to buy another policy?
No, if you already have an
acceptable medical insurance policy, you will not
be required to purchase a second policy. However,
you will be asked to show your insurance card along
with your other official documents when you register
for school. Your insurance company must have an
office in the U.S. in order to be approved. In addition, your company's coverage must be equal to or better than the coverage offered by our company. If you cannot meet these requirements, then you will be required to purchase insurance at registration.
- But I never get sick! I
don’t want to buy insurance.
You will be required at registration
to show proof of effective medical insurance. Your registration will not be complete until
you have complied with this requirement. Medical
treatment in the United States can be very expensive.
It is much better to have insurance and not need
to use it than it is to have an accident or receive
treatment in a hospital and be without adequate
insurance.
- Okay, I’ll either
bring insurance from home or buy the policy you
offer! How do I know which is better?
That’s a good question.
You should compare the two plans. Click
here to see a summary
of coverage under the plan we offer at registration.
- Are there any other requirements
I should know about?
Yes, there are two additional
health requirements.
- Mississippi state law requires
all students to be inoculated against measles,
mumps, and rubella. If you cannot show proof
of having received 2 MMR injections, then you
must receive the injections after arriving on
campus. Cost: $20.
- Mississippi state law
also requires international students to receive
a chest X-ray as part of the school registration
process. Students are not allowed to provide
their own X-ray films. The cost of the X-ray
at the University Health Clinic is $75.00.
- Okay, so far we have insurance,
MMR vaccinations, and chest X-ray. Is there anything
else that I should know about before I arrive in
the U.S.?
If you have allergies or
require certain perscription medication, it would
be a good idea to bring English translations of
your specific medical situation.
