Our curriculum is designed
to develop communicative competence
in writing and speaking -- an emphasis reflected in
the ELI Proficiency Battery, which includes a composition
exam and an oral fluency exam. Students can enter
an undergraduate degree program at The University of Southern Mississippi without having to take the TOEFL upon
achieving a Proficiency 2 or Proficiency 1 rating
on the ELI Proficiency Battery.
Quality Instruction from Beginning
to Advanced Levels
The program accommodates students
from beginning to advanced language proficiency and
is administered by a professional, experienced faculty.
The ELI fosters cross-cultural awareness within the
university and the community by offering ELI students
opportunities for interaction with native English
speakers both on and off campus. Our English as a
Second Language program is one of academic preparation
with the goal of preparing students for admission
to university degree programs.
Conversation Partner Program
The ELI offers an optional conversation
partner program at no additional cost. University
students team with ELI students helping them practice
their listening/speaking skills. These “cultural
ambassadors” help ELI students become a
part of the campus, the local community, and the United
States.
Conversation Partners meet regularly to talk, share
a meal or a snack, play a game of chess, or attend
a campus event. Groups meet during the class day,
but often get-togethers are arranged in the evenings
or on weekends. As friendships develop, partners enjoy
going to movies, attending sports events, shopping,
and participating in many other recreational and entertainment
activities.
Campus Services and Resources
ELI students enjoy the same campus privileges as
fully-enrolled Southern Miss students.

to sports events: football, basketball, baseball
