Safety Abroad
Southern Miss provides a wide range of study-abroad opportunities, and the health and safety of our students and faculty are of primary concern. Therefore, we have undertaken a variety of measures to protect the safety, security and well-being of our students.  These include close monitoring of U.S. Department of State cautions, advisories, announcements and warnings; registration of programs with U.S. embassies and consulates and the development of a plan that provides guidelines for program officials to follow in the event of emergencies.  Should an international emergency occur, program personnel will work in consultation with local authorities and U.S. consular personnel to institute all necessary security measures.

Health Abroad

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while overseas is central to making the most of your experience. To ensure that you're doing everything possible to protect and preserve your health, we recommend you consult with your physician or counselor before departure to talk about health issues including (but not limited to) infectious diseases, physicals, food and water safety, and prescription medications.

Consult with your current insurance provider to determine if your health and accident insurance will cover you while abroad, and to ensure that you have a policy that is appropriate for your experience. International Programs requires that all program participants purchase the International Student Identity Card (ISIC), which, in addition to student discounts on certain travel-related activities, provides some accident and medical coverage including medivac and repatriation. Information about the ISIC will be provided in students' packets once they are accepted for the Southern Miss Study Abroad Program; cards are issued through our office and cost $22. It's important to note, however, that this coverage is limited and you will want to determine if additional coverage through your current policy or through additional policies may be warranted.
