Universidad de Alcala de Henares
RESIDENCIA UNIVERSITARIA
Southern Miss exchange students at Alcala may apply to live in the "Residencia Universitaria" situated a few miles away from the campus and accessible by regular (about every 15 minutes) bus. The Residencia Universitaria is comprised of a number of housing units containing a kitchen, bathroom, and several rooms (from 4-8) which may be either shared or single. Each room contains a desk, chair, bed, wardrobe, reading lamp, and bookcase. Some rooms are carpeted. Pay phones and coin-operated laundry facilities are also available. Linens and towels are normally provided, and the rooms are cleaned on a regular basis by university housekeeping.
Tennis courts, a large cafeteria, and a spacious student lounge are centrally located. Students living in the Campus Residencia may participate in either of two meal plans – a full plan offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner; or a partial plan offering breakfast plus one additional meal each day, lunch or dinner. The Residencia Universitaria offers a host of activities for their residents and encourages participation in extracurricular events.
Students may also opt to live in privately-owned apartments. However, we recommend that you plan to live in the campus residence halls first to get your bearings, and move if you find suitable accommodation later in the semester.
Homestay options are not normally available for Southern Miss exchange students.
TRANSPORTATION
Alcala offers superb public transportation in the form of buses and trains. Students can obtain discount bus passes and get virtually anywhere. Some students opt to buy bicycles. Cars are expensive, both to purchase and to maintain, so you will probably want to utilize other sources of transportation.
INSURANCE
All international students will be required to purchase the International Student Identity Card through Council Travel which provides some basic accident and health coverage. Students may wish to purchase additional coverage either through Council Travel or though another policy.
STUDENT VISA
Students who study in Spain for a period of more than six months are normally required to obtain a student visa
(approximately $100) from the Spanish embassy, or from one of the regional consulates. Students should call to request the visa forms/instructions as soon as possible after notification of acceptance and should allow several weeks for the consulate to process the requisite documents.
WORKING IN SPAIN
Although it may be possible to find some kind of part-time work (tutoring, baby-sitting, etc.), students should not count on obtaining employment in Spain to help fund their program abroad.
