02.19.15 Purging Former Employee Access in SOAR
Unreported terminations are creating a growing security risk in USM’s data systems. In order to mitigate this risk, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, a new purge process will be initiated in SOAR. It will utilize a system of notifications and escalations sent only to signature authorities, affected user IDs, and high-level managers.
This will allow reasonable time for department review and update of affected users’ status with the Human Resources Department. Each level of contact provides an opportunity to preserve access or remove access for affected user IDs in SOAR.
If you receive one of these notices, your prompt attention and interaction is requested in order to avoid interruption of any potentially valid user IDs' ability to access data. Please follow the instructions as soon as possible.
If you have any questions please contact AppSec@usm.edu.
02.18.15 Important News about Faculty Staff Email Outlook App
If you have downloaded the Outlook App for your Android/iOS devices, please be aware that the university has it blocked for security reasons. At this time, the app fails to meet security and policy standards that are common to higher education institutions, including Southern Miss. Southern Miss, along with many other universities and companies have expressed concerns to Microsoft.
However, you can still have email access on your mobile device by following the directions at http://www.usm.edu/sites/default/files/groups/itech/pdf/how_to_set_up_owa_app_for_o365_apple_android_windowsdevices.pdf.
A few of the concerns specifically regarding the Outlook App:
· Lack of support for ActiveSync policies
· App allows the ability to bypass security and encryption rules
· Lacks the ability to conduct a full device wipe in case of a lost/stolen device
· Credentials, along with a subset of email, contacts, and calendar information, are cached in an Amazon cloud
