Building Rewire ProjectSecurityClean Access is one of several components of the new network designed to keep Southern Miss computer users safe from malware, viruses, worms, hackers, and other forms of attack. The new network is a resource that Southern Miss community members and collaborators depend upon and share. To keep this important resource viable, IT must verify that the systems, applications and devices connected to the new network are clean and entail at least a minimal level of self-protection. When a computer — or independent device such as a PDA or game console — connects to the Southern Miss network and that machine is not assessed as a "safe" machine, its owner will be directed to information and resources which can be applied to bring the machine up to an acceptably safe configuration. Data Security The loss of data can occur in any number of ways, through "hacking" systems that have weak passwords and out-of-date security patches, to people either losing or having laptops that contain sensitive information stolen. In either case, protecting and securing personal and confidential data is a responsibility all of us at Southern Miss share. To find out what Southern Miss is doing to secure university systems and data, or to find out what you can do to secure your own personal information and files, refer to the online data security page at: http://www.usm.edu/infosec/policies.php Choosing Good Passwords Choosing a good password should be considered a critical aspect of securing systems. Insecure and/or shared passwords account for the majority of recent compromises on and off campus. Creating a good password doesn't have to be difficult if you follow instructions from the IT Security Office; see tips for good passwords in the security web site: http://www.usm.edu/infosec/pw-policy.php Security for your Southern Miss E-mail Almost all email software supports SSL encryption. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is already in use in Webmail. When you visit this site, your web browser uses SSL encryption to securely exchange data with the computers hosting these applications. http://www.usm.edu/itech/golden/setup-clients.php Security Policy The Southern Miss Information Security Policy describes the role of information security in supporting the academic mission of the university through the recognition of the growing importance of securing electronic resources.
