(Q) How do I call the switchboard operator?
(R) If you need basic information for campus you can call the campus operator by dialing “0” from any campus phone, if you are calling from off campus dial 601-266-1000. We also have an online directory to look up faculty staff numbers and departmental listing to look up departmental telephone and post office boxes for your convenience.
 
(Q) How do I make local calls from a campus phone?

(R) If you are calling an on campus number all you need to dial is the last 5 digits of the phone number (6-xxxx). Five digit dialing is also available between Hattiesburg campus and Gulf Coast Student Services Center. If you are calling off campus you will need to dial 9+601+xxx-xxxx. You will have access to call locally within a 55 mile radius of Hattiesburg.

* If your long distance code is used to make a local call it will be charged as a long distance call.

 
(Q) How do I make long distance phone calls from a campus phone?

(R) An official Southern Miss long distance code is required and calls must be dialed as follows. To obtain and official long distance code, click here.

  • Dial 9, then listen for dial tone
  • Dial 1 + Area Code + 7-digit telephone number + long distance code (Prompt for long distance code is three short beeps)
  • Telephone must be hung up for at least five seconds between all long distance calls. Otherwise, phone line may stay open and you will continue to be charged.
 
(Q) What phone features are available for faculty and staff phones?
(R) Departmental phones have the following available features: area calling, auto callback, call transfer (on campus only), call waiting, conference calls (up to 6 callers), hold, voicemail, call forwarding/cancel, redial, and send all calls to voicemail.
