Ray Scurfield
Director

Dr. Scurfield is Professor of Social Work, Director of the Katrina Research Center, President of the Gulf Coast Faculty Council and coordinates counseling services at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. He has eight outstanding teaching awards and was both the 2006 Mississippi NASW Social Worker of the Year and designated by Southern Miss as a “Hero of Katrina” for his post-Katrina efforts. His MSW and DSW are from the University of Southern California.  Dr. Scurfield was an Army social work officer on a psychiatric team in Vietnam and had a 25-year career with the Department of Veterans Affairs in which he directed several regional and national Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder programs. His 60+ publications include a trilogy of books about war trauma, the most recent War Trauma. Lessons Unlearned From Vietnam to Iraq (2006). He has made 350+ media appearances. Conference and training presentations include 60 Minutes, Nightline, New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, NPR and numerous NPR-affiliated stations nationwide.

Shugana Campbell Williams

Shugana Williams joined the KRC team in January, 2008. She has been in the library science profession for over five years first serving as a graduate assistant in McCain Archives and Library Civil Rights in Mississippi Digital Project. Later, she became the Reference Archivist at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University,  and Visual Collections Librarian at the University of Mississippi. She holds a M.L.I.S. from the University of Southern Mississippi and a B.A. in History from Tougaloo College.

Jamie Aten

Assistant Director

Jamie D. Aten, Ph.D. (Indiana State University) is the Assistant Director of Health and Mental Health for the Katrina Research Center and Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Southern Mississippi. He is the co-editor of three forthcoming books Spirituality and the Therapeutic Process: A Comprehensive Resource from Intake through Termination, Spiritually Oriented Interventions for Counseling and Psychotherapy ( both by American Psychological Association Books) and Culture and the Therapeutic Process: A Guide for Clinicians (Routledge). He is also guest co-editing the Journal of Clinical Psychology: In Session on treating religious patients. His current research focuses on African-American faith communities affected by Hurricane Katrina, which is being supported by grants from the Mississippi Minority Institute for Improvement of Geographic Health, Pew Charitable Trusts and Rand Gulf States Policy Institute, Red Cross and Foundation for the Mid-South, and United Jewish Communities. He serves as the Representative to the APA Committee on Early Career Psychologists for Division 36 (Psychology of Religion) and as the Rural Health Coordinator for the Mississippi Psychological Association.

Dr. Dillon's main research interest is in the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients in coastal ecosystems. Currently,he is evaluating the nitrogen dynamics in surface waters of the Mississippi Sound to examine the sources, sinks and bioavailability of the largest nitrogen pool in these waters, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Currently,his research group is conducting bacterial growth and respiration experiments to determine whether nitrogen or phosphorus limits heterotrophic bacterial production in Mississippi Sound. Other research interests include the delivery of nutrients, organic matter, and comtaminants by groundwater seepage into coastal waters.  He is also interested in the nitrogen and carbon cycling in closed marine aquaculture systems.

Brian Richard

Assistant Director

Brian Richard has extensive experience in economic, fiscal and policy research.  Brian is currently Director of Regional Analysis of the Trent Lott Center of Excellence for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship at Southern Miss.  At the Lott Center, his work concentrates the impacts of economic development projects, local retail and industrial analysis, and research into the state of the southern Mississippi economy.  He also serves Assistant Director for Economic Development at USM's Katrina Research Center. Previously, Brian was Director of Research for the Mississippi Gaming Association where he conducted various policy and impact studies of tourism activities in Mississippi and around the U.S.  Prior to that he was employed in the Mississippi State Economist's office where he was responsible for Mississippi's IMPLAN economic and fiscal impact model and performed impact studies for a wide variety of industries.

Teresa Welsh

Assistant Director

Dr. Teresa S. Welsh, faculty at Southern Miss Hattiesburg, is a professor of library and information science. Areas of interest include visualization of information, distance education, Website development, qualitative research and bibliometric research.  Before joining the faculty in 2003, she was an instructor at the University of Missouri School of Information Science & Learning Technologies where she was awarded the High Flyer Award for Teaching Excellence.

  Deanne Stephens Nuwer, Ph.D. earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in history in 1996 from The University of Southern Mississippi.  Her specialities include medical history, social history, oral history, and women's studies. Her manuscript on the 1878 Yellow Fever Epidemic in Mississippi is forthcoming in spring 2009 through the University of Alabama Press.  She has numerous chapters and articles published that explore southern events and cultural trends, particularly in Mississippi.

Lin Harper

Interim Assistant Director

Lin Harper, Ph.D., currently serves as both the Proposal Development Specialist for the College of Arts & Letters at The University of Southern Mississippi and as Interim Assistant Director for the Center for Oral History & Cultural Heritage.  Lin is a southern girl, born in Tennessee and reared in Mississippi.  She is an alumni of Jones County Junior College and The University of Southern Mississippi, graduating in 1997 with a doctorate in Adult Education.  Early on, Lin found she has a knack for being a "start-up" person, someone who is good at getting programs set up and operating on time and on budget.  Since 1994, she has worked at Southern Miss in a variety of grant-funded positions and start-up jobs.

Jennifer Downey

Proposal Development Specialist

Jennifer Downey is the Development Specialist for the Center for Research, Evaluation, Assessment, and Training Services (CREATeS) in the College of Health (Hattiesburg).  She has worked in the College of Health since 2000 and previously held several other administrative positions at Southern Miss. She has over 25 years' experience working with health, education, and social service organizations in all areas of grant proposal development.  She provides support services to the KRC staff and others who are interested in preparing grant applications related to the KRC's mission.

Judy Day Isbell is director of Web-based Marketing for Southern Miss Gulf Coast and does Web and graphic design for the Gulf Park Campus and teaching sites on the Coast. she has been a part of the Katrina Research Center since its inception. Keith Fishman
Fine Arts Advisor-in-Residence

Keith Fishman is a fine arts photographer and collector of both 20th Century and contemporary photographs. He serves as chair of Fine Arts Initiatives of Photofutures at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Fishman is expected to complete his Masters of Arts in September 2008 at the School of Mass Communication and Journalism at Southen Miss. Fishman has donated two shows to the Katrina Research Center, Silent Witness and Southern Discomfort. The second show is planned to debut at the Katrina Research Center on the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, August 29, 2008. Diane DeCesare Ross is currently Curator of Manuscripts, Archives, and Digital Collections at McCain Library & Archives at The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus.  Her educational background is in American Studies, photography, anthropology and Library and Information Science. Diane also serves as Director of the Mississippi Digital Library and is a member of USM Libraries Disaster Response Action Team.
