B.S. in Recreation
The Bachelor of Science degree program in recreation offers professional preparation in therapeutic recreation. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with internship and practicum experience, preparing students to successfully enter a variety of recreation administrative and therapeutic recreation roles.
All students pursuing a minor in recreation must complete 18 hours in recreation-related HPR courses. Minors in recreation will reflect one of two emphasis areas: recreation administration or therapeutic recreation.
For the recreation administration emphasis area, the following courses are required: HPR 200, 322, 323 and 351. The remaining six hours may be selected from approved electives following consultation with a recreation adviser.
For the therapeutic recreation emphasis area, the following courses are required: HPR 200, 322, 323, 350 and 351. The remaining three hours may be selected from approved electives following consultation with a recreation adviser.
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Recreation Program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT). The accreditation includes the option areas of Leisure Services Management and Therapeutic Recreation. The Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT) accredits baccalaureate programs in parks, recreation, tourism, sport management, event management, therapeutic recreation, and leisure studies offered at regionally accredited institutions within the United States and its territories, and at nationally accredited institutions in Canada, and Mexico.
