Procedures for Developing a Fully Online Course at
The University of Southern Mississippi

Contact your college Alternative Learning Coordinator (ALC) or the Learning Enhancement Center at 266-5518 for assistance if necessary. Contact information for college Alternative Learning Coordinators can be found on the LEC website at http://www.usm.edu/lec/des/faculty.php.

Faculty and/or Chair visit the Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) (http://www.usm.edu/lec) website to learn more about distance education at Southern Miss.
A decision is made by faculty and/or Chair to put a course online; the appropriate Alternative Learning Coordinator (ALC) is contacted.
The ALC will contact the LEC (601.266.5518) to ascertain if the course has already been approved for online delivery. All courses approved for online delivery are available on the LEC website (http://www.usm.edu/lec/des/course_offerings.php).

A. If the course has been approved for online delivery, a course shell will be generated approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the beginning of the semester when the course is scheduled for delivery. Once the course shells are created, the LEC will notify the ALC’s so they can notify their faculty. The Senior Online Coordinator in the LEC should be notified by email if any NEW courses are approved for online delivery AFTER ALC’s receive email notification. This email should come directly from the ALC of the college requesting the course.

B. If the course has not been approved previously for fully online delivery, this process should be followed:

  1. Departmental/College Curriculum Committee approval: ALC’s will be in attendance at these meetings
  2. Dean Approval
  3. Academic and/or Graduate Council Approval (http://www.usm.edu/ac_council/Proposals/Guidelines3-29.html#modifications)
ALCs will attend AC/GC meetings involving course approvals pertaining to their respective colleges.
  4. Provost Approval (through AC/GC and LEC)
  5. Submission to LEC for SREB and IHL guideline approval process – course syllabus should be included
  6. Upon final approval, a course shell will be created and step A now applies.
  7. The ALC will coordinate Instructional Design support and Blackboard training for the faculty member with the Learning Enhancement Center if necessary. The training scheduled can be found at http://www.usm.edu/ee/schedule/index.php.
  8. LEC will review internal council (AC/GC) approved syllabi for SREB Electronic Campus requirements prior to submission to the Provost for final institutional approval.
The Electronic Campus of the SREB and Institutions of Higher Learning Institutional (IHL) in Mississippi have requested that each institution name an Institutional Coordinator for Distance Learning activities and the Institutional Coordinator will submit courses approved by appropriate councils, deans, and LEC staff to Provost for final university approval.
  9. The SREB/IHL Institutional Coordinator will submit Provost-approved courses to IHL for approval.
  10. IHL will submit approved courses to the SREB Electronic Campus for activation and inclusion in the SREB MS e-Campus site.
  11. LEC staff will activate courses on “live” server during the intersession prior to classes being taught and ALCs will be notified by email.
  12. ALCs will be notified by LEC when courses are activated by the Electronic Campus of the SREB and the institution.
