What is Podcasting?

A podcast is a digital media file that is shared over the web. It can be downloaded and played back on portable media players and personal computers.

The term podcast can mean either the content itself or the method by which it is distributed; either can be referred to as podcasting. The term "podcast" is a combined term. ìPodî comes from the widespread use of Apple's portable music player, the iPod; a pod also now refers to a container of some sort. ìCastingî refers to the idea of broadcasting to a container or pod.

The host, creator, or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically via subscription or links directly to the podcast file itself.

This site is a pilot for launching the podcasting program at Southern Miss. There is a lot of valuable information within the site, so feel free to browse around.
