Welcome to our Web Site!

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA) strives to support and contribute to the professional development and education of library and information science students, both graduate and undergraduate, at the USM School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). LISSA works to provide SLIS students with an active channel of communication and representation with the administration and faculty, and encourages professional contacts within the field of librarianship. Membership is open to all USM SLIS students.

LISSA (Library and Information Science Student Association) is an official student chapter of the American Library Association (ALA). Each undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the School of Library and Information Science is eligible to be a LISSA member.

LISSA is active in several areas, including volunteer support of the Children's Book Festival, hosting speakers on professional development, and providing activities for social interaction between both students and faculty.

How to get involved:

  • Fill out the LISSA Membership Form
  • Attend LISSA meetings, in person or online through Blackboard.
  • Volunteer to be a LISSA remote site representative.
  • Tell us what you would like to see the organization accomplish--this is YOUR organization, voice your opinion!

LISSA meets regularly at a time convenient to the officers. The time and date of the meetings will be announced via LIS news and announcements. Meetings are now being held primarily online in virtual chat during evening hours so that distance students have an easier time of attending. Meetings are open to all students, both graduate and undergraduate, and all are encouraged to attend. If you have questions, contact Dr. Xinyu Yu or Dr. Scott Klingler, the LISSA faculty advisers. Meetings follow ROBERTS RULES OF ORDER.

LISSA is here for you. Any LIS student who has a question related to LISSA, their SLIS program, or that needs basic university information can ASK LISSA Officers or Advisors via e-mail.

If you would like instructions for creating a Blackboard account, or if you already have an account and would like instructions for registering for SouthernMiss@TheLibrarySchool, please contact Adrienne Patterson, Service Coordinator.

We need YOUR participation and input! E-mail the officers and attend LISSA meetings--let us know what's on your mind!
