Recent Events:


    Sushi Social January 25th at 6PM
   

     As the president of LISSA, I hereby declare our first sushi social a screaming success!!! (say that 5 times real fast).   I was         having such a great time talking and getting to meet you all, I didn't notice how much time had past. I must say, this was the     first time I've ever been asked to leave a restaurant. it makes me feel like such a rebel, even if it was just because they needed     the tables.

    I look forward to meeting you all again and seeing you at future library functions.

LISSA Activities

LISSA is involved in service and professional activities on many levels. Below is a sampling of the activities LISSA has performed in the past or will perform in the months to come.

  • Professional / Conference Activities
    • We provide members for ALA's Student to Staff program; these members attend the annual conference for free in return for working as staff members.
    • We sponsor trips for LISSA officers to ALA annual conferences.
    • We sponsor trips for some SLIS students to MLA (Mississippi Library Association) conferences.
    • Members often attend workshops and seminars held by many professional associations.
    • LISSA holds an annual book sale on campus. The proceeds help a student attend ALA conferences.

  • University and SLIS Activities
    • We provide volunteers for the annual Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival.
    • We supply employment announcements through the listserv "slisjobs."
    • We endeavor to provide mentoring services for incoming students, both local and distant.

  • Community Service
    • LISSA members regularly volunteer with area public schools and the local PACE HeadStart.
    • After Hurricane Katrina devastated coast libraries, LISSA members helped collect and distribute books donated to the 10,000 Books Drive.
    • At the annual Children's Book Festival, LISSA sells Lucinda Pins. The purchase of these pins not only raises funds for LISSA, but also raises money for the homeless.

  • Just For Fun
    • LISSA hosts holiday parties, orientation parties, and faculty luncheons.
    • LISSA members get together at conferences for dinner and fun.
