Freeing the Power of the Individual

LOWP Founders

Live Oak Writing Project was founded because of the growth of its sister-site, The South Mississippi Writing Project. Dr. Jeanne Ezell was director of that site, and began providing satellite Invitational Summer Institutes on the Gulf Coast campus. As SMWP grew, Dr. Ezell realized the need for an additional site on the Coast. Mary Kay Deen and Dr. Frances Weiler had been the instructors for those satellite programs, and were instrumental in preparing for Live Oak. They enlisted the help of Dr. Nancy Masztal and Dr. Joe Thrash from the Coast campus. They also contacted Dr. Sherry Swain, then director of The Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute. By the time Dr. Elaine White arrived at Southern Miss in August of 2000, the local support for a writing project was already established. The three ladies completed the grant application to be submitted to the National Writing Project. The site was funded in 2001. Mary Kay and Frances continued to serve as Co-Directors for LOWP until 2006.
