Invitational Summer Institute is the gateway into Live Oak Writing Project. Fellows are chosen by application and interview. LOWP begins accepting application materials as early as July of each year. Interviews are conducted in March, and participants are notified as soon as the interview process is complete.
ISI begins with a pre-Institute Seminar in April, followed by a day of demonstration lesson coaching in May. Beginning June 1, fellows attend sessions every Monday through Thursday for the month of June. Sessions begin promptly at 8:45 and end by 3:00 each day. The third week of ISI, fellows spend one entire day in New Orleans for a day of writing as part of the New Orleans Writing Marathon. In the final week, they travel to Hattiesburg to participate in Rural Voices Radio and then celebrate the close of the institute with Visitors' Day on Wednesday and a Celebration Day on the last Thursday.
Upon completion of all ISI requirements, fellows become affiliated with LOWP as Teacher Consultants and participate in providing staff development, becoming members of writing and continuity groups, and attending events sponsored by the Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute and National Writing Project. |
