Willie Simmons serves as Senator, District 13, Bolivar, Humphreys and Sunflower Counties. Manager of Simmons & Associates Consultant Firm and owner of The Senators' Place Restaurant in Cleveland, Mississippi.
Senator Simmons serves on eight Senate Committees: Highways and Transportation, Chair; Agriculture; Appropriations; Corrections, Legislative Budget Committee, Ports and Marine Resources, Public Health and Welfare and State Library.
He was employed by the Mississippi Department of Corrections as Deputy Director to the Commissioner (1990-1992), Counselor and Director of the Job Placement/Pre-Release Program (1975-1990). From 1973 to 1975 he served as an employee of the United States Postal Service in Cleveland, Mississippi. He has served with the United States Army, taught Social Studies in the Bolivar County School System and served as a visiting instructor at Delta State University.
Formal education includes a High School Diploma, Hinds County Agricultural High School, Utica, MS; Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science, Alcorn State University 1967; Master of Education Degree in Guidance and Counseling, Delta State University 1976; Educational Specialist Degree in Counseling and Administration, Delta State University, 1978.
Professional and public organizations include: Former member, Cleveland School District Board of Trustees, Bolivar County Hospital Board of Directors, Past President of the Mississippi Association of Professionals in Corrections, President and Founder of the Bolivar County 100 Black Men Organization, Executive Committee Member of Mississippi Delta Council's B.F. Smith Chair for Economic Development at Delta State University.
Simmons is a member of the National/Regional/State Legislators Association, Chair of the Foundation for Education and Economic Development, Mississippi Economic Council Leadership Alumni Association, Mississippi Head Start Friends Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Brotherhood of Masons, National and Bolivar County Chapters of the Alcorn State University Alumni Association, Delta State University Alumni Association, Bolivar County Rec-Con League, American Legion Mound Bayou Post, and National Council of Negro Women, Cleveland Area Civic Club, National Association of Black Legislators and the Mississippi Association of Professionals in Corrections. He is also a member and trustee of Solomon Chapel A.M.E. Church, Cleveland, Mississippi.
Simmons is married to Rosie Simmons and they have four children; Avery, Christopher, Reginald and Sarita along with seven grandchildren.
