Construction Completed on the New Oceanographic Support Facility
The new Oceanographic Support Facility (OSF) is now undergoing finishing touches and will be ready to use in the next few months. The OSF is a critical facility needed for DMS personnel to fully participate in ocean observing activities that are expected to transform oceanographic research as well as coastal management. Ocean observing is likely to become the “weather service” of the ocean and as such will involve the expenditure of billions of dollars in federal funding and require the education of hundreds of operational oceanographers. Construction of the OSF is therefore critical to DMS’ economic development, expanded research funding, and increased student numbers. The OSF will serve as a storage, servicing and staging facility for large-scale oceanographic instruments, equipment and vehicles.
